Around St Andrews


Pittenweem HarbourFurther around the coast to the east of St Andrews you come to the picturesque fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife. They offer a little peace and tranquility as you meander through the narrow streets and wander around the harbour.  Crail (Heritage Museum), Pittenweem (Annual Arts Festival) and Anstruther (Scottish Fisheries Museum) are all worth a visit. St Monans boasts the recently restored Windmill and salt pans taking you back in time to a lucrative business in the area. On to Elie and you find the golden beaches perfect for the children to enjoy. In all these quaint villages offer a great visitor experience.

If you head North from St Andrews to Dundee you will see the masts of the RS Discovery at Discovery Point as you cross the Tay Bridge. This is well worth a visit, as is the Verdant Works textile museum.

  Hill of TarvetHill of Tarvet
Hill of Tarvet house was remodelled in 1906 by the Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer around Mr F B Sharp’s collection of French and Chippendale-style furniture, porcelain and paintings. The kitchen premises offer a fascinating insight into ‘life below stairs’. Lorimer also designed the gardens, with formal lawns, yew hedging, flowering borders and a sunken rose garden.

Abernethy Round TowerAbernethy Round Tower

The Abernethy Round Tower was built in the early 9th century. This 72ft/22m tall tower was built by the monks from the nearby monastery and has served several purposes; as a place of refuge, as a belfry and as a sepulchral. In 1072 Scottish king Malcolm Canmore was here forced to kneel and pay homage to William the Conqueror.
