Central St Andrews
Blackfriar's Chapel Blackfriars' Chapel was founded in the thirteenth century and only this late addition remains, built around 1525.   Madras CollegeMadras College was founded in 1832 by Dr Andrew Bell who devised and education system known as the Monitorial or Madras system.
 
 
HarbourThe Harbour dates back many centuries but the pier is more modern.  It is tidal and is now used mainly for pleasure boats. West PortThe West Port dates from the sixteenth century and is the only remaining gateway from the ancient city.
 
 
The PendsThe Pends was the principal entrance to the Priory and is thought to be fourteenth century. Younger HallThe Younger Hall, built in 1924 is the University Music Centre and the venue for student graduations.
 
 
St Salvators TowerSt Salvators Church and Tower were founded in 1450 by Bishop Kennedy who is entombed in the church. Patrick HamiltonPatrick Hamilton was Scotlands first martyr in the Reformation who was accused of heresy and burnt at the stake in 1528 outside St Salvators.
 
 
St Andrews CastleSt Andrews Castle
was originally built around 1200 though most of what remains was built around the sixteenth century.  It had been destroyed and rebuilt several times over this period. The Bottle Dungeon and the mine and counter mine are remnants of a more disturbed past.
George WishartGeorge Wishart was burned to death outside the castle in 1546.  The spot is marked by the initials GW on the roadway and a plaque describes this event.
 
 
St Rule's TowerSt Rule's Tower, otherwise known as St Regulus Tower is thought to date to around 1127. St   Tom Morris GraveThe grave of the golfer Tom Morris can be found in the Cathedral burial grounds.
 
 
St Andrews CathedralAndrew's Cathedral was founded in 1160 by Bishop Arnold but was not consecrated until 1318 by Bishop Lamberton. The Cathedral suffered damage in a storm in 1409 and was allowed to decay from that point.   Haunted TowerThe Haunted Tower, part of the Abbey Wall, was used in 1605 for the bodies of plague victims and was sealed until 1868. Stories exist of the ghost known as 'The White Lady of the Haunted Tower'.
 
 
R & AThe Royal & Ancient Clubhouse was built in 1854 and is the headquarters of golf.   St Mary'sSt Mary's College
Founded in 1537 and teaching theology since 1579.
